Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production boss Sean Bailey announced it was in development during his portion of the virtual Disney Investor Day presentation.

Goldberg won’t just be reprising her role but she will also produce the movie alongside Tyler Perry. This new collaboration marks the fourth one between Perry and Goldberg. They most recently partnered for 2018’s “Nobody’s Fool” with Tiffany Haddish. While promoting that film on “Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen,” Perry suggested he and Goldberg team up to produce a third “Sister Act.”

Back in 2018, it was revealed that Insecure co-EP Regina Hicks and then Star showrunner Karin Gist were working on a script for a new Sister Act.

In 1992 Sister Act was released. Emile Ardolino directed the film from a script by Paul Rudnick. Whoopi Goldberg starred as a lounge singer who was forced to join a convent after being placed in a witness protection program. After grossing over $200 million worldwide, the film spawned a franchise, which consists of the 1993 sequel Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit and a musical adaptation, which premiered in 2006.

Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, while it is a sequel, is loosely based on the life of Crenshaw High School choir instructor Iris Stevenson. Bill Duke directed the widely successful sequel. One that many may argue is better than the original.
