Algee Smith, Tre McBride, Xavier Mills Among 11 Set to Join Jamie Foxx in Netflix’s Sports Drama ‘Fight for ’84’

Netflix’s Fight for ’84 continues to expand its ensemble with Algee Smith, Tre McBride, Al-Shabazz Jabateh, Mitchell Edwards, Jamir Cope, and Xavier Mills joining Jamie Foxx and Malachi Beasley in the upcoming sports drama.

Currently filming in New Jersey, Fight for ’84 unfolds in the aftermath of a tragedy: after the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team is killed in a 1980 plane crash, a new coach (Foxx) steps in to rebuild the team from the ground up — leading them to a record-breaking run at the 1984 Olympics, where they’d go on to win the most medals in U.S. Olympic boxing history.

The film also stars Adrian Martinez, Javier Bolaños, Shea Whigham, Dan Perrault, and Will Chase.

Colombian filmmaker Andrés Baiz (Griselda, Narcos) directs from a script by Oscar nominees Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) and John Gatins (Flight), alongside Andy Weiss (White Boy Rick).

Producers include Eric Newman for Grand Electric, Bryan Unkeless for Night Owl, Jamie Foxx, and Michael W. Abbott for A Move Films Production. Executive producers are Andy Weiss for A WeBros Entertainment Production, Henry Tillman, and Datari Turner.

We previously reported that Malachi Beasley will co-star opposite Foxx, marking another major milestone for the Yale-trained actor. Beasley will also appear in Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming thriller A House of Dynamite — his first job out of school.

Fight for ’84 was first announced during Netflix’s 2025 upfront presentation in May. A premiere date has not yet been set.
