Truman Broadnax was told he had just a three percent chance to live.
For many, that would’ve been the end of the story. For him, it became the beginning of purpose — and now, a film.
The new independent feature 3% draws from Broadnax’s real-life near-fatal shooting and the emotional aftermath that followed. But the film isn’t interested in sensationalizing violence. Instead, it centers what comes after: the betrayal, the reckoning, and the strength required to rebuild when everything has been stripped away.
“I was told I had only a 3% chance to live,” Broadnax said. “When I woke up, I knew my life had a purpose beyond survival. 3% isn’t about glorifying the streets. It’s about the consequences — and the strength it takes to come back.”
Directed by Sacramento native Curshion Jones, the drama is rooted not just in true events, but in the very neighborhood that shaped them. Shot entirely in Del Paso Heights, the production intentionally employed local residents and included multiple Grant Union High School alumni in both cast and crew roles — making the film as much about community investment as storytelling.
The film stars Tyrone Betters (The Unbreakable Boy), Nupeir Garret (Snowfall), and Sasha Del Valle, alongside Nicole Carouthers, Lonhendre Keggins, and De’Tuan Williams
“This film represents survival in its rawest form — not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually,” Jones shared. “Having the city support a story that comes directly from the community shows what’s possible when art and leadership align.”
Many of the cast and crew members are Grant Union High School alumni, reinforcing the film’s deep connection to the community it portrays. The production received meaningful support from the Office of the Mayor of Sacramento, assisting with location access and logistical coordination — a notable alignment between municipal leadership and grassroots filmmaking.
Produced under Tru Entertainment in collaboration with Cue & Coda Films, 3% blends crime and drama while staying grounded in lived experience. Curshion Jones not only directs but also serves as producer alongside Jevon Stallworth, Ronald Richardson, and Epiphany Anderson, with Broadnax executive producing. Cinematography is led by Director of Photography Greg Keith.
3% is scheduled for a theatrical release this summer.
