Alicia Keys’ ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ Will Close on Broadway Next Month; Brandon Victor Dixon to Return for Final Run

After nearly two years on Broadway, Hell’s Kitchen, the musical inspired by the life and music of Alicia Keys, will play its final performance on February 22 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre, producers announced.

Ahead of the closing, original company member Brandon Victor Dixon will return to the production beginning January 27, reprising his Tony-nominated role as Davis, the absentee father at the center of the story. Dixon will remain with the show for the rest of its Broadway engagement, taking over the role currently played by NE-YO.

The musical officially opened on April 20, 2024, following a successful Off-Broadway run at The Public Theater in late 2023. By the time it closes, Hell’s Kitchen will have played nearly 800 performances on the Shubert stage and generated over $100 million in ticket sales during its Broadway run.

While the production consistently grossed more than $1 million per week for much of its engagement—peaking at $1.8 million in a single week—box office numbers had recently softened. For the week ending January 11, the musical grossed $828,189, below its weekly operating costs, with attendance at 79% capacity.

Despite the Broadway closing, Hell’s Kitchen is far from finished. The musical is currently touring the U.S. on a multi-year national tour and is set to launch international productions in South Korea, Germany, and Australia. Producers also revealed the show is expected to return approximately 60% of its $22 million capitalization to investors by closing, with additional revenue anticipated from touring and international runs.

The current Broadway cast includes Amanda Reid as Ali, Kelsee Kimmel as Jersey, Yolanda Adams as Miss Liza Jane, Lamont Walker II as Knuck, and NE-YO as Davis through January 26. The ensemble features a large cast of performers spanning dance, vocal, and acting roles.

Featuring music and lyrics by Keys and a book by Kristoffer Diaz, Hell’s Kitchen is a coming-of-age story centered on 17-year-old Ali and her complicated relationship with her mother and estranged musician father, set against the backdrop of 1990s New York City. The production is directed by Michael Greif, with choreography by Camille A. Brown.

At the 2024 Tony Awards, Hell’s Kitchen earned 13 nominations, including Best Musical, and won two Tonys for performances by Maleah Joi Moon and Kecia Lewis, in addition to a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

Produced by AKW Productions, Hell’s Kitchen exits Broadway as one of the last remaining new musicals from the 2023–2024 season—closing a chapter that blended Alicia Keys’ personal history, contemporary Broadway storytelling, and a chart-topping catalog into one of the most talked-about musicals of the decade.
