Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo are set to reunite for their first feature collaboration since the Academy Award–nominated Selma, with a brand-new project titled Heist of Benin. The announcement was made today at the Studiocanal Paris showcase, where the film was revealed alongside other upcoming international projects.
Set in contemporary London, Heist of Benin is described as a “thriller that intertwines art, love and restitution.” The film reportedly draws inspiration from historical events surrounding the Benin Bronzes, promising a mix of high-stakes adventure and deeply resonant themes.
DuVernay, whose last feature was 2022’s Origin, expressed excitement about returning to a collaboration with Oyelowo. “Reuniting with David in this way feels full circle. This film speaks to history, identity and love, all through the lens of a high-stakes, modern adventure. I’m thrilled to bring it to life with him and Studiocanal,” she said.
Oyelowo, who starred as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, added, “Ava and I have been looking for the right story to tell together again. Heist is that story. It’s thrilling and high-powered with deeply resonant themes that matter to us both.”
The film is being produced by Endurance Media’s Steve Richards and Jake Katofsky alongside Yoruba Saxon’s Lisa Bruce and Oyelowo himself. Screenwriter Quiñones, whose original idea sparked the project, will serve as executive producer. Studiocanal will finance, distribute, and handle international sales, with Ron Halpern, Shana Eddy, and Sam Shipp overseeing the studio’s involvement.
While production dates have yet to be announced, the pairing of DuVernay and Oyelowo suggests a strong creative synergy, harkening back to the success of Selma and Middle of Nowhere.
