The world of Avatar is expanding once again.
20th Century Studios has officially dropped the first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash, the highly anticipated third chapter in James Cameron’s visually groundbreaking sci-fi saga. The teaser began playing in theaters over the weekend ahead of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and is now available to watch online. The film is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
In this third installment, we return to Pandora alongside Marine-turned-Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), his warrior partner Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their children, who once again find themselves in danger. And while the trailer keeps most of the plot under wraps, it’s clear that not all Na’vi clans are on the same side this time around.
The Ash People Enter the Chat
At the center of the conflict are the Ash People, a fierce and battle-worn clan led by Oona Chaplin’s Varang — aka the Ash Queen — who is already making waves with her chilling declaration to Sigourney Weaver’s Kiri: “Your goddess has no dominion here.” Yeah, it’s like that.
James Cameron teased that Varang isn’t your typical villain. “She will do anything for her people, even things we would consider evil,” he told Empire. Cameron also revealed that Fire and Ash is shifting away from the simple “humans bad, Na’vi good” binary. That evolution is on full display here, as it looks like the Sully family — and their water-based Metkayina allies — will go head-to-head with the fire-aligned Ash clan in what’s shaping up to be a multi-front battle for Pandora’s future.
Familiar Faces and New Clans
Returning cast members include Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Jack Champion, Trinity Bliss, Bailey Bass, Britain Dalton, and Kate Winslet. The trailer also gives glimpses of new additions like the Windtraders — another new Na’vi clan introduced in the film — as well as more action with Sully’s human ally Spider (Jack Champion), who continues to straddle both worlds.
Like its predecessor, Fire and Ash was filmed concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water between 2017 and 2020. According to Cameron, two more sequels are already in the works, scheduled to hit in 2029 and 2031.
The previous two Avatar films have earned a combined $5.24 billion globally, with the first film still holding the title of highest-grossing movie of all time. The Way of Water opened to $134 million domestically and closed out with $2.32 billion worldwide, making Fire and Ash one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.
And while Disney is keeping the full synopsis tightly under wraps, the official logline simply promises: “An immersive new adventure with Jake Sully, Neytiri, and the Sully family.” That’s vague — but the trailer makes it clear: this chapter is darker, more divided, and just as breathtaking.
