BET+ has officially renewed the darkly comedic drama series “Average Joe” for a second season, much to the excitement of its fans. The series, which premiered on June 26, 2023, quickly gained traction and became the number one scripted drama on the platform during its debut week.
“Average Joe,” created by Robb Cullen, takes inspiration from Cullen’s own life. The story is set in Pittsburgh’s “The Hill” district and follows Joe Washington, a blue-collar plumber portrayed by Deon Cole. Joe discovers that his recently deceased father led a secret life, stealing millions from dangerous individuals. As these criminals believe Joe knows the whereabouts of the money, he and his close-knit group of family and friends are thrust into a high-stakes, life-or-death quest to uncover the truth and locate the stolen fortune.
The first season of “Average Joe” received strong reviews, securing an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show’s success is a testament to its engaging storyline and dynamic characters. Season one starred a talented ensemble cast, including Tammy Townsend, Malcolm Barrett, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams, Michael Trucco, Ashley Olivia Fisher, Pasha Lychnikoff, and Ashani Perkins.
In a strategic move to increase its audience, BET+ plans to make the first season available on Netflix this summer. This decision aims to boost the show’s exposure and build anticipation for the upcoming second season.
Production for season two is set to begin in late 2024 in South Africa. Robb Cullen, along with McG, Corey Marsh, Mary Viola, and Deb Evans, will continue to serve as executive producers. Rose Catherine Pinkney will also join as an executive producer representing BET.
