Danny Reagan isn’t exactly getting a warm welcome in his new city.
CBS has unveiled the first trailer for Boston Blue, the upcoming Blue Bloods spinoff starring Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Reagan. This time, the longtime NYPD cop trades New York for Boston, where his first encounter with his new partner is… complicated.
The teaser opens with Danny sprinting after a suspect, only to have a gun pulled on him by Boston detective Lena Silver, played by Star Trek: Discovery alum Sonequa Martin-Green. He insists he’s a cop and even offers to show his “shield.” When Lena corrects him — “You mean your badge?” — Danny doesn’t miss a beat: “Where I’m from, it’s a shield.”
From there, the two uneasy detectives are forced to work together. Danny, known for his reputation, admits it’s true — but only because he’s known “for getting things done.” Eventually, the pair strike a truce, though not without plenty of banter. Their dynamic even comes with nicknames: “Brooklyn” and “Bean Town.”
Still, Boston Blue isn’t straying far from Blue Bloods’ family-driven DNA. In a nod to Reagan family dinners, Lena invites Danny to her family’s Shabbat meal, where her pastor grandfather, played by Ernie Hudson, tells him: “We are one family, and we have faith in our family.”
The new series follows Danny’s fresh start with the Boston PD and his reluctant but growing partnership with Lena, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Together, they launch their first case: investigating a deadly fire at a tech company that uncovers secrets tied to facial recognition, family ties, and questions of justice that link the Reagan and Silver families.
The cast also features Maggie Lawson, Marcus Scribner, Gloria Reuben, and Ernie Hudson, with Bridget Moynahan reprising her role as Erin Reagan in the premiere.
Wahlberg, who played Danny for 14 seasons on Blue Bloods, previously teased the spinoff as “the next chapter” for the detective, while Martin-Green called joining the CBS family “a partnership I’m super excited for.”
Boston Blue premieres Friday, Oct. 17 at 10/9c on CBS.
