The first trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially arrived, and yes — it’s already cemented itself as one of next year’s must-see theatrical events.
Universal has unveiled the long-awaited teaser for Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s legendary saga, giving audiences their first real glimpse at the filmmaker’s ambitious return following Oppenheimer.
The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, the battle-worn Greek hero attempting to find his way home after the Trojan War. The trailer teases a brutal, mythic journey filled with shipwrecks, towering beasts, shadowy caves, and sweeping sea voyages — all rendered with Nolan’s signature scale and precision.
Also featured are:
Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, alongside Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Corey Hawkins, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Benny Safdie, and more.
One standout moment includes Odysseus and his soldiers inside the infamous Trojan horse, a sequence that had previously been teased in an exclusive six-minute IMAX preview shown before select 70mm screenings earlier this year.
Universal has confirmed that The Odyssey was shot across the globe using brand-new IMAX film technology, marking the first feature film ever captured entirely in IMAX’s largest format. According to Universal executive Jim Orr, the studio is positioning the film as “a once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece.”
Leguizamo recently described Nolan’s approach as refreshingly hands-on, comparing him to an indie filmmaker — just with an enormous canvas. And after Oppenheimer earned seven Oscars, expectations are understandably sky-high.
The Odyssey sails into theaters July 17, and if this trailer is any indication, Nolan’s take on the sword-and-sandal epic is shaping up to be massive in every sense of the word.
