Colman Domingo Joins the Cast of ‘Wicked: For Good’

Tony and Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo is officially headed to Oz.

The Wicked team confirmed his addition to the highly anticipated sequel on Monday via Instagram, where Domingo appeared surrounded by a few familiar-looking plush toys before declaring, “See you in Oz!”

And the mystery role? Domingo will voice The Cowardly Lion, completing the iconic lineup alongside Dorothy, The Tin Man, and The Scarecrow. The character was first introduced as a cub in the original Wicked, rescued by Elphaba and Fiyero — and now returns fully grown as the story overlaps with The Wizard of Oz.

Director Jon M. Chu had hinted that the reveal would surprise audiences, saying, “Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us [this character’s] voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild.”

About Wicked

Based on the long-running Broadway musical — which itself was inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West — the Wicked film series reimagines the world of The Wizard of Oz from the perspective of Elphaba, the green-skinned young woman who would later be labeled “wicked.”

The first film, released in 2024, introduced audiences to the unlikely friendship between Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) as they navigated love, power, and politics at Shiz University in the magical land of Oz. Their bond — once rooted in sisterhood — becomes fractured as they choose different paths that ultimately define them as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch.

The Sequel

Wicked: For Good continues the story where the first film left off, diving deeper into how Elphaba’s defiance of the Wizard’s corrupt regime turns her into the most misunderstood figure in Oz. The sequel will overlap with events from The Wizard of Oz, offering a new lens on the moments audiences thought they already knew.

Returning cast members include Erivo, Grande, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, and Bowen Yang as Pfannee.

For Domingo, this marks another standout addition to an already remarkable run. He recently starred as Mister in The Color Purple and in the acclaimed prison drama Sing Sing, and will next appear as Joe Jackson in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael.

Wicked: For Good picks up after the events of the first film, following Elphaba as she lives in exile, demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West while continuing her fight for Oz’s silenced Animals and seeking to expose the Wizard’s deceit.

The film hits theaters November 21, 2025.
