Cynthia Erivo to Lead Warner Bros. Original Animated Musical Comedy ‘Bad Fairies’

Cynthia Erivo is headed into The Zone ???????? Her production company Edith’s Daughter is teaming up with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes for a sci-fi action thriller, Saturation Point, at Universal. Based on Adrian Tchaikovsky’s novel, the story follows a search and rescue mission into a deadly rainforest where not all intelligent life is human… Could this be Universal’s next big sci-fi franchise?

Cynthia Erivo is lending her powerhouse voice to Bad Fairies, an original animated musical comedy from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation.

The film follows a delightfully rebellious crew of fairies who disrupt their prim-and-proper world with a little chaos and a lot of glitter. Erivo stars as Jayne Staplegun, a trailblazing fairy whose defiance ignites a full-on rebellion in the magical realm. The role marks her first lead in a major animated feature film—and given her stage and screen resume, the energy is bound to be electric.

Directed by Megan Nicole Dong (Centaurworld) and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, the film is penned by Deborah Frances-White. Music will be a major highlight: Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss—the Tony-winning duo behind Six: The Musical—will write the original songs, with Isabella “Machine” Summers of Florence + The Machine composing the score and contributing to the soundtrack.

Behind the scenes, Bad Fairies is stacked with talent, including producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James C.J. Williams, and character designer Uwe Heidschötter. The story department is led by Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt, with animation production underway in London through DNEG Animation.

Bad Fairies will also make history as the first feature released under the new first-look deal between Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation. The film is slated for a theatrical debut on May 21, 2027.

Erivo—an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony Award winner—continues to expand her artistic range across genres and mediums, from Wicked to now leading an animated world that sounds anything but ordinary.
