Hobie Brown is getting his own spotlight—and Daniel Kaluuya is helping bring him to life.
Sony Pictures Animation is officially developing a Spider-Punk animated feature with Kaluuya and Primetime creator Ajon Singh attached as co-writers. The film is in early development and plot details are being kept under wraps, but the natural expectation is that Kaluuya will reprise the voice role of Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Punk, which he originated in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The character instantly became a fan favorite, standing out with his rebellious attitude, electric guitar, and anti-establishment swagger. Now, he’s set to take center stage in his own animated film, marking a major first for the Spider-Verse franchise.
Created by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel, Spider-Punk made his comic debut in 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10 during the Spider-Verse crossover. Residing on Earth-138, Hobie Brown is a punk rocker-turned-hero who fights back against systemic oppression and corruption with a sharp tongue, a sharper sense of justice, and serious guitar skills.
Kaluuya’s take on the character in Across the Spider-Verse was widely praised and will return in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, currently slated for release on JUNE 25, 2027.
This new Spider-Punk project adds to Sony’s ever-expanding Spider-Verse. The animated franchise launched with 2018’s Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, followed by the even bigger box office hit Across the Spider-Verse in 2023. Outside animation, Sony’s also building its live-action universe with Spider-Noir, a Nicolas Cage-led series in development at MGM+, and Brand New Day, the next Tom Holland-fronted Spider-Man film, set to hit theaters on JULY 31, 2026.
Kaluuya continues to build an impressive resume behind the camera. He recently co-directed Netflix’s The Kitchen and is producing a live-action Barney movie under his 59% Productions banner with Mattel and A24. He’s also currently filming an untitled A24 movie alongside Chris Rock.
His Spider-Punk co-writer Ajon Singh recently wrapped production on Primetime, a thriller he wrote and executive produced for A24 starring Robert Pattinson. The film, reportedly inspired by To Catch a Predator, is directed by Ren Faire’s Lance Oppenheim.
Kaluuya is repped by WME, B Side, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Singh is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment, and Ziffren Brittenham.
