Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s Hannibal Epic for Netflix to Begin Filming This Summer in Italy

Denzel Washington is preparing to step into the role of one of history’s most legendary military commanders.

The upcoming Netflix historical epic centered on Carthaginian general Hannibal, directed by Antoine Fuqua, is finally gearing up for production. According to reports, filming is set to begin this summer in Italy, with the production based at Rome’s famed Cinecittà Studios.

The project was first announced in 2023 and will reunite Washington and Fuqua for their sixth collaboration. Pre-production and location scouting are already underway across Italy, where the majority of the large-scale shoot is expected to take place.

The film is written by three-time Academy Award nominee John Logan, whose credits include Gladiator, The Aviator, Hugo, and Skyfall. Behind the camera, the production has also enlisted legendary cinematographer Robert Richardson, a three-time Oscar winner known for his work on films such as JFK, The Aviator, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

The Story of Hannibal

The film will chronicle the life and campaigns of Hannibal Barca, widely regarded as one of the greatest military strategists in history. The story will focus on the pivotal battles he led against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War, which took place between 218 and 201 B.C.

Hannibal is best remembered for his daring military campaign in which he led an army — famously including war elephants — across the Alps to invade Italy. Under his command, Carthaginian forces secured several major victories against Roman armies, allowing him to control large portions of southern Italy for more than a decade.

Eventually, Hannibal’s campaign came to an end when Roman forces counter-invaded North Africa, defeating him at the Battle of Zama.

Another Reunion for Washington and Fuqua

The film continues a long-running creative partnership between Washington and Fuqua that began with Training Day in 2001, the performance that earned Washington his Academy Award for Best Actor.

The pair have since collaborated on The Equalizer, The Equalizer 2, The Equalizer 3, and The Magnificent Seven.

Washington recently returned to the world of historical epics with Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, in which he portrayed Macrinus, a former slave who rises to power within the Roman Empire.

Production Team

Washington will also produce the film alongside Erik Olsen, Adam Goldworm, Todd Black, Clayton Townsend, and Fuqua through Hill District Media’s first-look deal with Netflix. Executive producers include Scott Greenberg, Kat Samick, Katia Washington, Frank Moll, and Jeremy Lott.

The project arrives as Fuqua prepares for the release of another major historical drama — the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, also written by Logan, which is set to hit theaters worldwide on April 24.

While the Hannibal film currently remains untitled, the scale of the production and the team behind it suggest Netflix is positioning it as a major historical epic centered on one of the most formidable figures in ancient warfare.
