Production has officially begun in Los Angeles County on Season 2 of Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, from Amazon MGM Studios and New Regency, marking a new chapter for the Emmy-winning spy drama.
According to Deadline, season 1 stars Maya Erskine and Donald Glover are both set to return, though not as the central focus of the series in the same capacity as before. According to reports, the duo are expected to reprise their roles as John and Jane Smith in some form, though the extent of their involvement remains unclear. Erskine will also step into an executive producer role for the new season alongside Glover.
Season 2 will introduce a new iteration of the iconic spy couple, continuing the anthology-style evolution of the series. Mark Eydelshteyn, known for Anora, is set to play the new John Smith, while Variety reports Talia Ryder has stepped in as Jane Smith after replacing Sophie Thatcher, who exited due to scheduling conflicts.
The series continues to evolve creatively behind the scenes as well. Anna Ouyang Moench (Beef, Severance) has taken over as showrunner, writer, and executive producer, following Francesca Sloane’s departure after Season 1. Glover remains an executive producer alongside a returning producing team that includes Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, Fam Udeorji, and Erskine.
Set to film in Los Angeles after receiving a $22.4M California Film Commission tax credit, Season 2 follows a production relocation from New York, where the first season was shot.
Season 1, released in 2024, reimagined the 2005 film premise with two strangers paired by a secret spy agency and forced into an arranged marriage as undercover operatives. The series became a breakout hit, earning 16 Emmy nominations and winning two awards, including recognition for Erskine’s performance.
While plot details for Season 2 remain tightly under wraps, the anthology format is expected to continue, with a new spy couple at the center and an expanded universe built around espionage, identity, and relationships.
