Netflix’s upcoming Nia Long and Larenz Tate romantic drama officially has a title — Don’t Ever Wonder — and an even bigger cast. The streamer has added Blair Underwood, Laz Alonso, Susan Kelechi Watson, Pauletta Washington, Dennis Haysbert, Chante Adams, Algee Smith, Grasie Mercedes, Navia Robinson and Yolonda Ross to the film.
Inspired by Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite, the project continues to keep its plot tightly under wraps, but the vibes are already giving grown-folk romance, deep intimacy, and that classic R&B storytelling energy.
Eugene Ashe — the filmmaker behind Sylvie’s Love — is directing from a script he co-wrote with This Is Us writer-producer Kay Oyegun. The film is produced by James Lopez, Charles D. King, and Poppy Hanks for MACRO Film Studios. Maxwell, John D. Hammond, Long, and Tate serve as executive producers.
The reunion of Long and Tate has already stirred up major excitement. Nearly three decades after they defined modern Black romance as Nina and Darius in the 1997 classic Love Jones, the duo is stepping into a new story that sources say will explore love, connection, and the complexities of relationships — in the spirit of Maxwell’s iconic debut album.
This also isn’t their only reunion. Long and Tate appear together in Antoine Fuqua’s Michael, the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic from Lionsgate, where they portray Katherine Jackson and Berry Gordy. That film hits theaters April 24, 2026.
Don’t Ever Wonder was originally developed at Amazon before landing at Netflix, where it’s now moving full steam ahead. With this cast? The romance lovers are about to eat.
