First Look at Matlock Season 2: CBS Reveals Premiere Details and Cast Updates

CBS has unveiled the first look at Season 2 of Matlock, starring Academy Award winner Kathy Bates. The second season will open with a special premiere event on Sunday, October 12 at 8:30/7:30c, ahead of its regular Thursday timeslot beginning October 16 at 9/8c.

Season 2 Premiere: “The Before Times”

The debut episode, titled “The Before Times,” finds Matty Matlock (Bates) facing new challenges both inside and outside of the courtroom. She questions the paternity of a man claiming to be Alfie’s father while her team investigates a high-profile arson case. Meanwhile, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall) works to shield Julian (Jason Ritter) from deeper entanglement in the Wellbrexa investigation. The episode was written by showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and Nicki Renna, and directed by Gina Lamar.

First Look Images

The newly released stills feature Bates alongside Skye P. Marshall, Leah Lewis, and David Del Rio. Notably absent from the promotional images is Ritter, sparking speculation about his role in the new season. However, Ritter confirmed earlier this year that he will continue as Julian, clarifying that his absence in promotional material is not tied to his participation in HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series.

Cast and New Additions

Season 2 will see the return of:

  • Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock
  • Skye P. Marshall as Olympia Lawrence
  • Jason Ritter as Julian
  • David Del Rio as Billy Martinez
  • Leah Lewis as Sarah Yang
  • Beau Bridges as Senior
  • Sam Anderson as Edwin
  • Aaron D. Harris as Alfie

Joining the ensemble is Justina Machado in a major recurring role as Eva, Senior’s fourth ex-wife. Eva is described as formidable, ambitious, and strategic, running Jacobson Moore’s Miami office while seizing opportunities for her own advancement. Niko Nicotera, who appeared in the Season 1 finale as the man claiming to be Alfie’s father, is also expected to return.

Looking Ahead

Bates teased that the new season will find Matty “no longer in control,” with her character facing unpredictable turns following the revelations of the Season 1 finale. Ritter added that viewers can expect a “juicy” and suspenseful season, noting that Urman has charted a course that builds on the show’s acclaimed first season.

While CBS has not confirmed an episode count, Season 2 is expected to follow the 18-episode format of its predecessor.

How to Watch

Matlock Season 2 premieres Sunday, October 12 at 8:30/7:30c on CBS before moving to its regular Thursday 9/8c slot beginning October 16. Episodes will also be available to stream on Paramount+.
