First Look at Michaela Coel in Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Christophers,’ Premiering at TIFF 2025

Steven Soderbergh is back at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) with his 39th feature film, The Christophers, and the first look at the highly anticipated project has arrived.

The drama stars Emmy winner Michaela Coel as a skilled art forger who’s hired by the children of a once-renowned painter, played by Ian McKellen, to complete a series of unfinished works. Their motive? To ensure a sizable inheritance before their father’s passing. But as the forgery unfolds, the narrative delves into deeper themes of legacy, deception, and artistic truth.

Written by longtime Soderbergh collaborator Ed Solomon (No Sudden Move, Mosaic), The Christophers marks the duo’s fourth film together and showcases the director’s signature minimalist visual style and sharp storytelling. TIFF describes the film as “a beautifully crafted chamber piece” and highlights its examination of value—monetary, emotional, and artistic—amid questions of authenticity and mortality.

Joining Coel and McKellen in the cast are Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer) and James Corden (The Prom). The ensemble adds dynamic energy to what TIFF calls a “staged mystery,” driven by personal stakes and moral ambiguity.

Produced by Jim Parks and Iain A. Canning (The Power of the Dog), the film is backed by Department M and Butler & Sklar Productions. Executive producers include Michael Schaefer, Mike Larocca, and Corey Bayes.

True to Soderbergh’s tradition, he also serves as cinematographer under the pseudonym Peter Andrews and editor under the alias Mary Ann Bernard.

The Christophers will have its world premiere at TIFF 2025, marking Soderbergh’s return to the festival following last year’s screening of his experimental horror film Presence, released by NEON earlier this year.

With a unique premise, Coel’s captivating presence, and Soderbergh’s reliable mastery, The Christophers is already one of the most talked-about titles heading into TIFF. The premiere date and potential distribution details have yet to be announced.
