‘Forever’ Season 2 Sets Production Start Date — Here’s All We Know

Forever is officially gearing up for its next chapter.

The Netflix coming-of-age drama from Mara Brock Akil is reportedly set to begin production on Season 2 on May 8, 2026, nearly a year after its renewal during the streamer’s 2025 Upfronts. Filming is expected to take place in Los Angeles and Martha’s Vineyard, continuing the show’s connection to both locations.

Inspired by Judy Blume’s novel, the series follows Keisha Clark and Justin Edwards, played by Lovie Simone and Michael Cooper Jr., as they navigate first love, family expectations, and the uncertainty of what comes after high school. Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, the series resonated for its grounded, emotionally honest portrayal of young Black love—balancing softness with the realities of growing up.

Speaking with Deadline, Akil reflected on what drew her to adapt Blume’s story, which has faced multiple bans over the years.

“Most banned books are banned because they’re truth-telling,” she said. “Judy Blume dared 50 years ago to tell young people the truth by anchoring a narrative on their very human curiosity and exploration.”

That emphasis on truth-telling became the foundation of the series, which updates the story for a new generation while staying rooted in themes of first love and self-discovery.

Season 1 ended on a quiet but defining note, with Keisha and Justin choosing to go their separate ways to focus on their individual futures—Keisha preparing for Howard University and Justin stepping into a gap year to pursue music. As Akil previously told Entertainment Weekly, the intention behind that ending wasn’t to close the door on their relationship, but to allow space for growth.

“Maybe they need time to grow so that they can come back together,” she explained, emphasizing that the story is as much about becoming as it is about love.

Akil is currently deep in the writing process for Season 2 but is keeping specifics under wraps. Speaking again with Deadline, she teased the direction of the new season while confirming the story will remain centered on its core couple.

“I’m excited about not revealing too much about where we’re headed for Season 2 until it’s time to,” she said. “I’ve been cooking in the kitchen… I want to serve you the best meal.”

“We will be following Justin and Keisha, as opposed to moving to a new couple. I think we have more to say with them before we pivot in a new direction.”

Behind the scenes, production is already taking shape. During our conversation with Wood Harris at the UPTOWN Honors Hollywood red carpet, the actor—who plays Justin’s father—shared that the team is “just getting the scripts” and preparing to shoot soon, signaling his return for Season 2.

While Netflix has not officially confirmed the full returning cast, the core ensemble is expected to return, including Simone and Cooper Jr., alongside key family members played by Wood Harris, Karen Pittman, and Xosha Roquemore. Those relationships were central to the first season, grounding the story in the dynamics of Black family life, support, and expectation.

The return to Martha’s Vineyard is also notable. Introduced in Season 1, the location served as a backdrop for moments of connection and reflection. Long regarded as a historic haven for Black families—particularly in Oak Bluffs—the island carries a legacy of community, culture, and generational presence, adding depth to the world the series continues to build.

The show has already proven its reach. Netflix’s 2025 engagement report shows Forever generated over 124 million hours viewed across 19 million views, with renewed interest in Blume’s original novel following the series’ debut.

With production expected to run through the summer, Season 2 will likely arrive in 2027. Until then, Forever looks poised to build on what made its first season connect—this time exploring who Keisha and Justin are on their own, and whether love can find its way back when the timing is right.
