Glynn Turman and Dawnn Lewis Return for Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Sequel Series as Hillman’s Legacy Deepens

Hillman College continues to grow.

Netflix has announced another round of casting for its highly anticipated A Different World sequel series, bringing back two more familiar faces while adding new names to the next generation stepping onto campus.

Dawnn Lewis and Glynn Turman are officially returning, reprising their roles as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor and Colonel Bradford Taylor. They join newly announced cast members Tichina Arnold who is joining as Darlene Duvall, Raven Goodwin as Dr. Brooklyn Boyer and Joshua Suiter as Andre.

Arnold’s casting also creates a full-circle moment, as she’ll appear alongside her real-life daughter, Alijah Kai Haggins, who plays Rashida in the series.

Revisiting Jaleesa and the Colonel

When audiences last saw Jaleesa Vinson and Colonel Taylor on A Different World, their story had taken an unexpected turn. After ending her relationship with Walter Oakes, Jaleesa shocked viewers by marrying Colonel Taylor in a surprise elopement. The couple quickly built a life together — with Jaleesa stepping into a new role as a stepmother to the Colonel’s children, Suzanne and Terrence, while also pursuing her own ambitions.

Jaleesa graduated from Hillman and launched a temporary employment agency, marking a major step in her professional journey. The couple later welcomed a daughter, Imani, expanding their blended family. Jaleesa and the Colonel were last prominently seen during the show’s fifth season before quietly fading from the series, with their storyline largely unexplored in later seasons.

Their return in the sequel series now opens the door to revisiting that chapter — and exploring what life has looked like for them in the years since.

A Growing List of Returning Hillman Alumni

With Turman and Lewis joining the lineup, the sequel now features a strong mix of original cast members returning to campus:

  • Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James
  • Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne
  • Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne
  • Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson
  • Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks
  • Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese
  • Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor
  • Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor

Jenifer Lewis will also return as Dorothy Dandridge Davenport, the former Hillman dean who now serves as a professor.

A New Generation Arrives at Hillman

At the center of the sequel is Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of Dwayne and Whitley. As she begins her freshman year, Deborah must navigate Hillman while carving out her own identity outside of her parents’ legacy.

She’s joined by a new class of students, including:

  • Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida
  • Cornell Young IV as Shaquille
  • Kennedi Reece as Hazel
  • Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir
  • Chibuikem Uche as Kojo
  • Vincent Jamal Hooper (Chicago Med) as Ellington
  • Elijah J. Roberts (Night Swim) as Jalen
  • Renee Harrison (All American: Homecoming) as Candace
  • Famecia Ward as Nellie Gaines
  • Dasan Frazier (Straw) as Xavier

Behind the Camera: Continuing the Legacy

The 10-episode single-camera comedy comes from showrunner, writer, and executive producer Felicia Pride, who is continuing the story of Hillman through a modern lens while honoring the cultural impact of the original series.

Debbie Allen — who directed 83 episodes of the original — returns to direct three episodes, including the premiere.

Original series creatives Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood also return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner.

Continuing a Cultural Legacy

Originally debuting in 1987 as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, A Different World became one of television’s most influential portrayals of Black college life and HBCU culture. The series tackled identity, relationships, race, and activism — shaping how audiences understood the college experience for a generation.

Now, with even more original cast members returning — including characters whose stories once faded into the background — the Netflix sequel is positioning itself as both a continuation and a reintroduction.

With production underway and the legacy cast continuing to grow, Hillman College is once again becoming a place where past, present, and future collide.
