HBO Drops First Trailer for Task, Starring Thuso Mbedu and Directed in Part by Salli Richardson-Whitfield

HBO is kicking off its fall lineup with Task, a gripping new drama from Mare of Easttown creator Brad Ingelsby — and the first trailer just set the tone. The seven-episode miniseries premieres Sunday, September 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO, with episodes streaming the next day on HBO Max.

The series stars Mark Ruffalo, Tom Pelphrey, Thuso Mbedu, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, and Phoebe Fox, with Mireille Enos in a recurring role. Salli Richardson-Whitfield and Jeremiah Zagar share directing duties, with both also serving as executive producers.

Set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, Task follows FBI agent Tom (Ruffalo) as he’s tapped by senior official Kathleen McGinty (Martha Plimpton) to lead a cross-agency task force investigating a string of violent home invasion robberies. Robbie (Pelphrey), a seemingly devoted family man, is secretly orchestrating the crimes — and his motives are as personal as they are dangerous.

“It’s easy to talk about forgiveness and mercy when it’s not your loss,” Robbie says in the trailer’s opening moments, set to Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here.” His plan? “I’m gonna take their money so we can have a better life.” As the investigation intensifies, McGinty warns, “We need to find this crew before a turf war escalates.”

The footage teases an emotional collision course between Tom and Robbie, both weighed down by fractured home lives and dangerous choices. Family dinners dissolve into shouting matches, partners question loyalties, and, in one tense scene, the two men find themselves staring down the barrel of each other’s guns.

Ingelsby serves as creator, writer, and showrunner, executive producing alongside Richardson-Whitfield, Zagar, Ruffalo, Mark Roybal, Paul Lee, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt. Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches of Public Record are co-executive producers.

Task premieres September 7 on HBO and streams next day on HBO Max, with new episodes airing weekly.
