HBO’s fall slate is officially a win. At the network’s Global Programming Slate Preview in New York, HBO confirmed that all three of its major new titles — Task, I Love LA, and The Chair Company — will return for second seasons. Each series debuted this fall and quickly became one of HBO’s strongest freshmen launches in recent years.
‘Task’ Will Return With Mark Ruffalo Back in the Lead
HBO wasted no time locking in a second season of Task, the Brad Ingelsby–created drama that grew week over week and closed its first season as one of the network’s fastest-rising debuts. Mark Ruffalo will return as FBI agent Brandis, following the nail-biter October finale that pulled in 4 million first-night viewers across HBO and Max.
Season one followed Ruffalo’s agent as he led a task force in Philadelphia’s working-class suburbs, tracking a string of drug-house robberies tied to a man driven by revenge. The ensemble featured Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Thuso Mbedu, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Raúl Castillo, Silvia Dionicio, Phoebe Fox, and Martha Plimpton — though not all are expected to return.
Behind the scenes, Ingelsby served as showrunner and executive producer alongside Jeremiah Zagar, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Paul Lee and Mark Roybal of Wiip, Ruffalo, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt.
With renewed momentum and Ruffalo officially onboard, season two aims to expand the world Ingelsby built — one that blends human emotion with escalating tension.
‘I Love LA’ Secures Season 2 as HBO’s No. 2 Freshman Comedy
Rachel Sennott’s I Love LA is also headed back for more sun, chaos, and Silver Lake strolls. The comedy has become HBO’s second highest-performing freshman comedy of all time across HBO and Max, currently averaging two million viewers in live-plus-three numbers.
The series follows Maia (Sennott), an aspiring talent manager navigating ambition, friendship, and love in Los Angeles when her college friend Tallulah (Odessa A’zion), a rising influencer, blows into town. The ensemble includes Leighton Meester, Josh Hutcherson, Jordan Firstman, True Whitaker, and buzzy guest appearances from Ayo Edebiri, Elijah Wood, Moses Ingram, Quenlin Blackwell, Froy Gutierrez, and more.
Sennott, who created, executive produces, and co-showruns with Emma Barrie, shaped the show as a coming-of-age dramedy for digital-native young adults carving out their identities and careers in a city built on reinvention.
‘The Chair Company’ Also Returning for Season 2
Rounding out the trio, HBO renewed The Chair Company, which the network touts as the No. 1 freshman comedy in its history. Created by Tim Robinson, the series continues his trademark absurdist humor while grounding it in workplace chaos and unexpected heart. Season one concludes on November 30.
Executive producers include Robinson, Aida Rodgers, Max Silvestri, and Lorene Scafaria, with a directing team that includes Robinson, Scafaria, Kevin Bray, and Bill Benz.
What’s Next?
HBO didn’t reveal premiere windows for any of the second seasons, but the quick renewals signal strong confidence in the slate — and firm proof that the network’s fall 2025 bets landed exactly the way it hoped.
Combined, Task, I Love LA, and The Chair Company give HBO a trio of hits across drama and comedy — each with distinct tones, standout casts, and growing audiences that already want more.
