Detective John Luther is officially back on the case.
Netflix has announced a sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun, with Idris Elba returning as the brooding detective in the next feature film based on the acclaimed BBC crime series created by Neil Cross. Joining him are Ruth Wilson, reprising her fan-favorite role as Alice Morgan, and Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk.
Jamie Payne, who directed The Fallen Sun and several episodes of the original Luther series, will once again helm the new project from a script written by Cross.
In the upcoming film, a wave of brutal and seemingly random murders in London pulls Luther out of the shadows and back into action — but this time, everyone wants him dead.
“Neil has yet again created a wonderfully dark tale to bring us all back together,” said Payne. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson.”
Cross added, “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family. I never stop wondering what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.”
Originally airing in 2010, Luther ran for five seasons and earned critical acclaim for its gritty storytelling and Elba’s commanding performance. The 2023 Netflix feature Luther: The Fallen Sun followed the detective breaking out of prison to stop a serial killer, played by Andy Serkis, with Cynthia Erivo joining as Odette Raine.
This new sequel marks a long-awaited reunion between Elba and Wilson, whose character Alice Morgan—a brilliant, psychopathic research scientist—shared an unforgettable and twisted bond with Luther throughout the series.
The sequel is produced by Chernin Entertainment alongside Cross, Elba, Gina Carter through their 22Summers banner, and Tim Lewis.
Filming is set to begin in February 2026.
