Jada Pinkett Smith Teases Return as Lena James in Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Sequel Series

School is officially back in session at Hillman College.

Production is now underway in Atlanta on Netflix’s highly anticipated sequel series to A Different World, and the revival continues to expand its returning legacy cast with another familiar face heading back to campus.

Jada Pinkett Smith has confirmed that she will reprise her role as Lena James in the upcoming series. The actress revealed the news on Instagram, posting a selfie in front of her trailer with the caption: “She’s back.”

Pinkett Smith originally joined A Different World during its later seasons as Lena James, a confident and outspoken Hillman student who quickly became part of the show’s evolving ensemble. Her return adds another layer of continuity between the beloved NBC classic and the next generation of students stepping onto campus.

The revival already features several returning Hillman alumni alongside a new class of students.

Charnele Brown will reprise her role as Kimberly Reese, while Jenifer Lewis returns as Dorothy Dandridge Davenport — the formidable former dean who now serves as a professor at Hillman.

Previously announced original cast members returning include Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, and Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, all set to appear throughout the first season.

A New Generation Arrives at Hillman

The sequel series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of Dwayne and Whitley. As she begins her freshman year at Hillman College, Deborah must navigate college life while attempting to build her own identity outside the legacy of her iconic parents.

Joining her is a new class of Hillman students including:

  • Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida
  • Cornell Young IV as Shaquille
  • Kennedi Reece as Hazel
  • Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir
  • Chibuikem Uche as Kojo
  • Vincent Jamal Hooper as Ellington
  • Elijah J. Roberts as Jalen
  • Renee Harrison as Candace
  • Famecia Ward as Nellie Gaines
  • Dasan Frazier as Xavier

Behind the Camera: Familiar Voices Return

The 10-episode single-camera comedy comes from showrunner, writer, and executive producer Felicia Pride, who continues the story of Hillman through a modern lens while honoring the cultural impact of the original series.

Legendary filmmaker and choreographer Debbie Allen — who directed 83 episodes of the original A Different World — returns to direct three episodes, including the premiere.

Original series writers and producers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood also return as executive producers alongside Mandy Summers and Tom Werner.

Continuing a Cultural Legacy

Originally debuting in 1987 as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, A Different World quickly evolved into one of television’s most influential portrayals of Black college life and HBCU culture. After Lisa Bonet’s departure following Season 1, the series centered on students like Whitley, Dwayne, Freddie, Ron, and Kimberly, tackling topics ranging from identity and relationships to race, politics, and campus activism.

Now, decades later, the Netflix sequel aims to reconnect audiences with Hillman while introducing its spirit to a new generation.

With production officially in motion — and more casting surprises still expected — Hillman College is once again preparing to welcome students old and new.
