Following the box office success of Superman, DC Studios is wasting no time expanding the saga of the Man of Steel. James Gunn has officially revealed that Superman: Man of Tomorrow will hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
Gunn, who returns to write and direct, made the announcement on social media with an original illustration from DC chief Jim Lee, depicting Superman alongside Lex Luthor in his iconic green-and-purple Warsuit. The reveal comes just weeks after Superman crossed $600 million globally, cementing itself as the year’s highest-grossing superhero film at $611 million worldwide.
Returning Faces & Luthor’s Evolution
David Corenswet is set to reprise his role as Clark Kent/Superman, with Nicholas Hoult expected back as Lex Luthor. The new image hints at Luthor’s next chapter: after his failed attempt to weaponize a Superman clone in Gunn’s first film, he now appears ready to battle the Man of Steel head-on with his armored suit.
The tease continues directly from Superman’s ending, which saw Luthor in tears as he was taken into custody. Gunn’s post leaves the door open for both vengeance and—possibly—an uneasy alliance.
DC’s Expanding Slate
The announcement slots Man of Tomorrow behind two other DC films already on the calendar:
- Supergirl (directed by Craig Gillespie, starring Milly Alcock) — June 26, 2026
- Clayface (directed by James Watkins, starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie) — September 11, 2026
The studio is also building out its DCU through streaming projects, including Lanterns, an HBO series starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, due in 2026.
Gunn’s Superman Saga
While Gunn emphasized this isn’t a “direct sequel,” Man of Tomorrow will continue to flesh out the larger DC Universe he and Peter Safran unveiled when they took over DC Studios. The first film not only reintroduced Superman and Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), but also added DC heroes like Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion).
With Superman: Man of Tomorrow now locked for summer 2027, Gunn has set the stage for Lex Luthor’s long-awaited armor-clad showdown with the Last Son of Krypton—bringing one of the comics’ most iconic rivalries into live action for the first time.
