Journalist Maurice DuBois Exits ‘CBS Evening News’ After 21 Years

Maurice DuBois is officially stepping away from the CBS Evening News. The longtime journalist announced his departure Thursday, confirming his final broadcast will air on December 18. The move arrives as CBS News undergoes a seismic restructuring following new leadership inside the division and parent company Paramount’s recent acquisition by Skydance.

DuBois shared the news on Instagram, calling his 21-year run at CBS — including his time at WCBS-TV in New York — “the honor of a lifetime.”

“To be welcomed into your homes night after night… what a privilege,” he wrote. “I’ll leave filled with gratitude, cherished relationships and amazing memories.”

His exit follows co-anchor John Dickerson, who revealed in October that he would also depart at year’s end. The two inherited the desk less than a year ago after Norah O’Donnell’s exit and were tasked with reshaping the broadcast to spotlight more reporter-driven storytelling. But despite format tweaks — and a pivot toward faster, breaking-news energy — the program remained in third place behind ABC’s World News Tonight and NBC’s Nightly News.

Behind the scenes, newly appointed editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski are steering a full reboot of the flagship broadcast. Sources say Weiss has been quietly scouting anchor talent, with names like ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman and CBS Mornings co-anchor Tony Dokoupil circulating internally. Though Norah O’Donnell’s name always pops up in speculation, insiders suggest her return is unlikely.

Cibrowski praised DuBois in a statement, highlighting more than two decades of reporting from the studio and the field.

“Maurice is deeply valued and respected as a journalist,” he said. “We wish him much success. It is my hope that we can work together again.”

Industry chatter also points to additional layoffs looming before the holidays, following the first round that hit shortly after Dickerson’s announcement.

For now, there’s no word on who will inherit the Evening News chair once held by Walter Cronkite — but a major refresh appears certain.
