Sony is switching up the game plan for its next Jumanji installment — and it’s a strategic one.
The studio has pushed the release of the Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart-led threequel to December 25, moving it two weeks from its original December 11 debut. The shift places the film after the highly anticipated box office showdown between Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, both set to hit theaters on December 18 — a collision already being dubbed “Dunesday.”
Instead of competing head-on, Jumanji 3 is stepping into a lane the franchise knows very well: the holiday corridor.
Why This Move Makes Sense
If there’s one thing the Jumanji franchise has proven, it’s that Christmas is its sweet spot.
- Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) opened just before Christmas and went on to earn over $960 million globally
- Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) followed a similar rollout and pulled in more than $800 million worldwide
Both films benefited from strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings over the holiday stretch — something Sony is clearly aiming to replicate.
By shifting to Christmas Day, the film avoids getting swallowed by two massive tentpoles while still capitalizing on peak moviegoing season.
The Cast and Creative Team Return
The upcoming installment brings back the core ensemble that helped redefine the franchise:
- Dwayne Johnson
- Kevin Hart
- Jack Black
- Karen Gillan
Returning cast members also include Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Marin Hinkle, Bebe Neuwirth, Lamorne Morris, and Rhys Darby, with Dan Hildebrand and Jack Jewkes joining the lineup.
Jake Kasdan returns to direct after helming the previous two films, co-writing the script alongside Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg. He also produces alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Matt Tolmach.
Bigger Picture: Playing the Long Game
This move isn’t just about avoiding competition — it’s about positioning Jumanji for longevity at the box office.
The December 18 weekend is shaping up to be one of the most crowded of the year. Rather than fighting for opening weekend dominance, Sony is betting on Jumanji’s ability to build momentum over time, especially with families and casual moviegoers during the holidays.
And historically, that’s where this franchise thrives.
What Else Is Opening Around Christmas?
As of now, Jumanji 3 won’t have the holiday frame entirely to itself. Other titles slated for the Christmas corridor include:
- The Angry Birds Movie 3 (Dec. 23)
- Werwulf, a new feature from Robert Eggers
- An untitled Paramount project centered on the NFL’s “Mr. Irrelevant”
Still, compared to the December 18 lineup, the competition is far less intense.
The Legacy It’s Building On
From the original 1995 film starring Robin Williams to its modern video game-inspired reboot, Jumanji has quietly become one of Sony’s most reliable franchises.
The last two films alone have generated over $2 billion globally, proving that this isn’t just nostalgia — it’s a formula that continues to connect with audiences.
Now, with a new release date locked, Sony is once again betting on that formula — just with a little more breathing room this time.
