Kenya Barris and Mike Epps Team Up For CBS Comedy Set in Post-Wildfire Altadena

Kenya Barris and Mike Epps are teaming up for a new CBS multi-camera comedy, set in the aftermath of devastating wildfires in Altadena.

The series follows two estranged Black brothers who reunite to sell their late grandmother’s house after wildfires sweep through Altadena. Epps, the only confirmed cast member so far, plays one of the brothers. Their plans hit a roadblock when they learn the grandmother’s caretaker owns part of the property and refuses to sell, forcing the siblings to live together. Through this setup, the comedy explores themes of community, legacy, and family amid the realities of loss and displacement.

The show’s Altadena backdrop is rooted in real-life tragedy. The January 2025 Eaton Fire devastated the area, killing at least 19 people and destroying more than 9,000 structures. Known for its vibrant and diverse community, Altadena’s history and culture provide a poignant foundation for the series.

The project marks Barris’ return to broadcast television and reunites him with Epps following their collaboration on the 2023 Netflix film You People.

Created and written by Barris, the untitled half-hour is produced through BET Studios, where Barris is a principal, and co-produced by CBS Studios—an uncommon collaboration between the two companies under Paramount Global’s TV Media portfolio. Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment is also on board as executive producer.

Barris will executive produce via his Khalabo Ink Society, alongside Epps and his producing partner Niles Kirchner. Kaplan also executive produces. Though early speculation suggested Barris might take on a co-lead role, only Epps is attached to star at this stage.

For Epps, the series follows his success with Netflix’s The Upshaws, which is heading into its fifth and final season. The show has earned 10 NAACP Image Award nominations, with Epps winning Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series in 2024.

Barris continues to expand his slate across platforms. His Khalabo Ink Society currently has The Vince Staples Show (Netflix) and Diarra From Detroit (BET+) renewed for second seasons. The company recently produced Amazon MGM’s The Underdoggs and is developing multiple projects, including Group Chat (Hulu), The Book of Jose (Showtime), and a limited series on Richard Pryor’s life.
