Netflix has officially ordered the comedy series I Suck At Girls, with Laila Pruitt, Kayo Martin, and Jeremy Ray Taylor set to lead the coming-of-age project based on Justin Halpern’s memoir of the same name.
The single-camera comedy follows three socially awkward high school sophomores navigating the chaotic and often humiliating realities of teenage romance and identity. Pruitt will portray Anna, alongside Martin as Steven and Taylor as Garrett, a trio of friends learning that being terrible at relationships might just be a universal part of growing up.
The series comes from Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, the creative duo behind Abbott Elementary, who will serve as showrunners. They’re executive producing alongside Bill Lawrence, the prolific producer behind Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and Scrubs, through his Doozer Productions banner. Warner Bros. Television will produce the series.
Netflix had previously given the project a cast-contingent pickup in late 2025, launching a search for its young leads earlier this year before officially moving forward with the series order once casting was finalized.
For Pruitt, the role marks another major step in her rising career. The young actress has already appeared in series like BMF and Will Trent, and landing one of the central roles in a Netflix comedy positions her to reach an even wider audience.
Halpern’s book I Suck At Girls, published in 2012, followed his earlier bestseller Sht My Dad Says*, which was adapted into a short-lived CBS comedy starring William Shatner. The memoir explores the painfully funny missteps of Halpern’s teenage years and attempts at romance — material the new series expands into a fictionalized ensemble story about adolescence and self-discovery.
This isn’t the first time Hollywood has tried to adapt the book. More than a decade ago, Halpern and Schumacker developed a version for Fox that evolved into the series Surviving Jack, starring Christopher Meloni, which ran for one season. The Netflix iteration reimagines the concept with a new premise centered on the trio of teenagers.
Filming for I Suck At Girls is expected to begin this summer in Los Angeles.
