Laverne Cox Joins David Duchovny in Satirical Comedy ‘Soapbox’

Laverne Cox has signed on to co-lead the upcoming satire Soapbox, starring opposite David Duchovny in a new comedy from filmmaker Andrew Jay Cohen.

Duchovny co-wrote the screenplay alongside Palm Springs director Max Barbakow and will also star in the film, which centers on an aging soap opera star who finds himself entangled in the absurdities of modern-day culture wars.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the project is described as a satirical comedy that explores the chaotic intersection of celebrity, media, and contemporary social debates.

Joining Cox and Duchovny in the ensemble are:

  • West Duchovny (Painkiller)
  • Randall Park (Fresh Off the Boat)
  • Jimmi Simpson (Westworld)
  • Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing)

Production on Soapbox began earlier this month in Los Angeles.

The film is produced by Fred Bernstein, David Duchovny, Tiffany Kuzon, Jeff David, Max Barbakow, and Andrew Jay Cohen. Cox also serves as an executive producer. Soapbox is being produced by Astute Films in association with Rookie, Inc.

Cox, also a four-time Emmy nominee, is best known for her work on Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black and Inventing Anna, as well as Prime Video’s Clean Slate. Her film credits include Promising Young Woman, Bad Hair, and Grandma. She will next appear in the upcoming Apple feature Outcome.
