LeVar Burton Boards Universal Pictures’ ‘One Night Only’

LeVar Burton (Roots, Reading Rainbow) are joining the cast of Universal Pictures’ One Night Only, set to hit theaters August 7, 2026. He joins Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, and recently added Molly Ringwald in the upcoming comedy.

One Night Only is based on Travis Braun’s Black List script and follows two strangers trying to secure a romantic partner on the one night each year when premarital sex is legal. Will Gluck — who rewrote the script and directs — is keeping details close, so it remains to be seen how much his version veers from the original premise.

Ringwald will play Turner’s mother, with Burton starring as her partner.

Gluck produces through Olive Bridge Entertainment, alongside Jacqueline Monetta, VP of the company. Universal’s Senior EVP of Production Development Erik Baiers and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the project for the studio.

Burton continues to expand his storytelling legacy. Along with acting, he hosts and executive produces Trivial Pursuit for Lionsgate, Hasbro and The CW. His decades of work in education and entertainment — including Reading Rainbow, which earned over 200 awards — and his iconic roles as Kunta Kinte in Roots and Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation cement him as one of the most impactful cultural figures in modern media. He is represented by WME.
