Brooklyn love stories aren’t new — but this one is something special.
The first trailer has arrived for Love, Brooklyn, filmmaker Rachael Abigail Holder’s tender, evocative romantic drama starring André Holland, Nicole Beharie, and DeWanda Wise. The film made its world premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and will open exclusively at New York’s Angelika Film Center on August 29, followed by a nationwide theatrical release on September 5 via Greenwich Entertainment.
Written by Paul Zimmerman and directed by Holder, Love, Brooklyn follows a writer (Holland) caught in a romantic tangle between his art gallery-owning ex (Beharie) and his new partner, a recently single mother (Wise). Supporting him through the emotional maze is his best friend (Roy Wood Jr.). Also starring Cassandra Freeman (Bel-Air) and newcomer Cadence Reese, the film explores modern love, identity, and resilience — all against the textured, ever-evolving backdrop of Brooklyn.
The project’s road to production was anything but smooth. As Holland, who also produced the film, shared at Sundance, “We had this script and were out to all the places that everyone goes to to get financing. People just didn’t share the vision… but that’s often the case.” It wasn’t until director Steven Soderbergh — a longtime collaborator of Holland’s from The Knick and High Flying Bird — stepped in as executive producer that momentum began to build.
“Steven said, ‘Let me read it.’ And after we met a few more times, he said, ‘I like it… why don’t you start tomorrow?’” Holland recalled. With Soderbergh’s support and Holland’s own production company backing the film, Love, Brooklynwas officially off the ground.
At Sundance, the film earned acclaim for its emotionally layered performances, romantic tension, and Holder’s graceful direction. Her vision brings Brooklyn to life with intimacy and specificity, capturing the beauty of the borough in a way that feels both grounded and cinematic.
The film is produced by André Holland, Kate Sharp, Patrick Wengler, Maurice Anderson, and Liza Zusman. Executive producers include Steven Soderbergh, Jeffrey Deary, Andy Steinman, Brian Katz, Thomas Zambeck, Alexander Leff, and Rachael Abigail Holder.
With its moody lighting, jazz-infused score, and emotionally rich performances, Love, Brooklyn feels like a love letter to a city and the complicated people who live in it.
