Macro Film Studios Expands Sony Partnership With New Multi-Year First-Look Deal

Macro Film Studios is leveling up its relationship with Sony Pictures.

The company has officially inked a multi-year exclusive first-look, co-financing, and distribution deal with Sony, further solidifying a partnership that has already delivered both commercial success and cultural impact.

Under the agreement, Sony Pictures will have exclusive first-look access to feature film projects developed and produced by Macro. The two companies will also co-finance select films, with Sony committing to release at least one Macro-produced, co-financed feature annually.

This move positions Macro—founded by Charles D. King—as an even more integral player within Sony’s film ecosystem, particularly when it comes to bringing distinct, often underrepresented stories to a global audience.

Building on Proven Success

The partnership isn’t starting from scratch—it’s building on a track record that’s already delivering.

Most recently, Macro co-funded Sony Pictures Animation’s GOAT, which has pulled in over $163 million globally. The film was produced alongside Stephen Curry and Erick Peyton’s Unanimous Media, Michelle Raimo Kouyate, and Modern Magic’s Adam Rosenberg and Rodney Rothman.

Before that, Macro teamed with Sony’s TriStar Pictures on One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA. The film proved to be a strong performer, earning $51 million worldwide on a $14 million budget, with a sequel already in development.

A Strategic Creative Alignment

For Macro, this deal is about scale and consistency.

“Sony has been an outstanding partner, and we’re proud to expand our relationship through a first-look and co-financing agreement,” said Charles D. King. “Building on our past work together, James Lopez and I look forward to continuing to bring distinctive stories across genres and formats to audiences worldwide.”

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch echoed that sentiment, highlighting Macro’s creative instincts and track record:

“Macro finds stories where others often aren’t looking… Charles and James have an extraordinary history backing their bold instincts and consistently show up being great creative studio partners.”

Why This Matters

This isn’t just another studio deal—it’s a strategic move that reinforces Macro’s position as a pipeline for culturally resonant storytelling within a major studio system.

With Sony backing distribution and co-financing, Macro is now set up to consistently deliver films at scale, while still maintaining the creative voice that has defined its brand.

And if their past collaborations are any indication, this partnership isn’t just about volume—it’s about impact.
