While production on Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been temporarily paused after Tom Holland sustained a concussion on set, casting for the highly anticipated Marvel-Sony film continues to move forward. Marvin Jones III has officially been tapped to play Tombstone, Deadline reports.
Jones is no stranger to the character, having voiced the menacing villain in Sony’s Oscar-winning animated hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its forthcoming sequel Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Also known as Lonnie Lincoln, Tombstone is one of New York’s most ruthless crime bosses. Created by writer Gerry Conway and artist Alex Saviuk, the hulking African-American albino with sharpened teeth and near-indestructible skin first appeared in Web of Spider-Man #36 back in March 1988. He’s remained a recurring nemesis for Spidey in the comics ever since.
Despite the week-long pause in filming, production on Brand New Day is set to resume September 29, with Sony still on track for the film’s July 31, 2026 release. The movie will mark the first live-action Spider-Man entry since 2021’s billion-dollar hit Spider-Man: No Way Home.
In addition to Jones, the film introduces Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas in undisclosed roles, with Zendaya returning as MJ and Mark Ruffalo expected to reprise his role as The Hulk. Shang-Chi filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton directs, with Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige producing.
Jones is best known for playing Tobias Whale on The CW’s Black Lightning. His recent credits include Shadow Force alongside Kerry Washington, All American: Homecoming, The Equalizer, and Halo. He’ll next appear in Amazon’s Criminal with Emilia Clarke and Adria Arjona, as well as Jonás Cuarón’s indie Gringo Champion.
