A24 is stepping into the world of pop superstardom with a sinister twist as the first trailer for Mother Mary finally arrives — and it’s every bit as bold, eerie, and intoxicating as you’d expect from director David Lowery.
The melodrama stars Anne Hathaway as the global pop icon known as Mother Mary, who finds herself spiraling emotionally as she prepares for a high-stakes comeback performance. To ground herself, she reaches out to Sam Anselm — her estranged best friend and former costume designer, played with razor-sharp tension by Michaela Coel. What starts as a creative reunion quickly swells into a charged love/hate entanglement, dredging up decades of unresolved wounds, jealousies, and obsessions.
Billed as an “epic pop melodrama” with heavy psychosexual undertones, the trailer leans all the way into its operatic energy. Hathaway wades through surreal performance sequences and chilling moments of isolation, while Coel brings a quiet fury as old resentments rise to the surface. And yes — there are hints of something darker lurking beneath all the glitter, maybe even occult.
Lowery assembles a magnetic supporting cast including Hunter Schafer, FKA Twigs, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Sian Clifford. The film also doubles as a music event: Hathaway, FKA Twigs, and Charli XCX each perform original songs, with additional music written and produced by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff.
Shot in Germany, Mother Mary was produced by Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, James M. Johnston, Jeanie Igoe, and Cologne-based Augenschein Filmproduktion. Daniel Hart provides the score.
