Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith has hit a major roadblock. Season 2 of the Emmy-nominated series has been put on indefinite hold, Deadline reports, leaving the fate of the stylish spy drama—and its central cliffhanger—uncertain.
The Cliffhanger That Might Never Be Answered
Season 1 ended with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s John and Jane Smith in a tense gunfight, their survival left intentionally ambiguous. The series was expected to follow an anthology-style format, with new actors stepping into the Mr. and Mrs. Smith roles each season. For Season 2, Anora’s Mark Eydelshteyn and Yellowjackets star Sophie Thatcher were tapped to lead, but production complications have now derailed the plans.
Cast Issues Stall Production
Reports suggest that despite early casting news, final deals with Thatcher, Eydelshteyn, and rumored guest stars—including Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, and Gael García Bernal—were never locked down. Production was originally targeting a fall start in Los Angeles after Amazon MGM Studios secured a $22.4 million California tax credit to relocate from New York. That move is now at risk, as productions must shoot within 18 months of receiving the credit to maintain eligibility.
From Jolie & Pitt to Glover & Erskine: A Franchise with History
The Mr. & Mrs. Smith concept has traveled quite a journey. It began with the 2005 New Regency-produced film starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, a glossy mix of action, espionage, and marital drama that became a cultural phenomenon—and even more infamous for sparking Jolie and Pitt’s real-life relationship.
Nearly two decades later, Glover and Francesca Sloane reimagined the story for television, stripping it down to focus on intimacy, loneliness, and the messiness of love, all against the backdrop of spy missions. Season 1 premiered in February 2024 and quickly became one of Prime Video’s top new debuts, ultimately earning 16 Emmy nominations and two wins, including Michaela Coel’s Guest Actress trophy.

With production halted, it’s unclear whether Mr. & Mrs. Smith will bounce back or fade into limbo. Indefinite delays don’t always spell cancellation, but they often signal a project stuck in difficult terrain.
