Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa has joined the cast of Bad Fairies, the upcoming animated musical from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation.
The original musical comedy follows a bold group of fairies who shake up their magical world with a little rebellion and a lot of glitter. Gatwa joins Cynthia Erivo, who was announced last month as the voice of Jayne Staplegun, a trailblazing fairy whose defiant streak inspires a movement against the status quo. While details about Gatwa’s character remain under wraps, his addition brings even more personality and energy to the project.
Bad Fairies is directed by Megan Nicole Dong (Centaurworld) and co-directed by Olivier Staphylas, from a screenplay by Deborah Frances-White. The film will feature original songs by Six: The Musical creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, with Isabella “Machine” Summers of Florence + The Machine composing the score and contributing to the soundtrack. Ian Eisendrath (KPop Demon Hunters) serves as executive music producer.
The creative team also includes producer Carolyn Soper, editor Sim Evan-Jones, cinematographer James C.J. Williams, and character designer Uwe Heidschötter, with Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt as heads of story. Production designers Justin Hutchinson-Chatburn and Mike Redman round out the team, with DNEG Animation handling digital production.
Bad Fairies marks the first feature film to emerge from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation’s first-look deal, signaling a new creative partnership focused on original storytelling and musical innovation.
Currently in production in London, Bad Fairies will hit theaters May 21, 2027. The film also represents Erivo’s first lead role in a major animated feature and another major move for Gatwa, who continues to build a dynamic career across genres and mediums.
