Netflix Drops Haunting Teaser Trailer For ‘Lord of the Flies’ Series Ahead of May Premiere

Netflix is bringing one of the most unsettling coming-of-age stories back into the spotlight—and this time, it’s darker than ever.

The streamer has released the first teaser for its limited series adaptation of Lord of the Flies, offering a chilling preview of what happens when innocence collapses into chaos.

Created and written by Jack Thorne, the four-episode series marks the first-ever television adaptation of William Golding’s 1954 novel. All episodes will debut on Netflix on May 4.

The series follows a group of English schoolboys stranded on a remote island after a plane crash. What begins as an attempt at order—led by Ralph (Winston Sawyers) and guided by the intellectual Piggy (David McKenna)—quickly fractures.

As power struggles emerge, Jack (Lox Pratt) pulls the boys into a rival faction, pushing the group toward something far more dangerous: survival without morality.

The teaser doesn’t hold back, showing violent confrontations, growing paranoia, and the boys’ descent into fear-driven chaos—culminating in the haunting line: “We have to kill the beast.”

Ike Talbut and Thomas Connor round out the leads in the series who are all joined by over 30 young actors portraying the island’s “biguns” and “littluns,” creating a fully immersive (and increasingly volatile) society.

Why This Adaptation Feels Timely

For Thorne, this isn’t just a retelling—it’s a reflection of today’s world.

He points to an ongoing cultural conversation around young boys, masculinity, and isolation, suggesting the story’s themes feel more urgent than ever. His goal? Not just to revisit the novel, but to push audiences to confront what it says about human nature.

A “difficult and dangerous account of who we are and what we’re capable of.”

Filmed in the rainforests of Malaysia, the series leans into an eerie, almost surreal aesthetic. Director Marc Munden used infrared “day-for-night” techniques to transform lush greenery into unsettling hues of red and pink—giving the island a dreamlike, almost hallucinatory edge.

This isn’t just another remake—it’s shaping up to be a psychological deep dive into power, fear, and the fragility of civilization.

And if the teaser is any indication, Lord of the Flies is about to feel a lot more brutal than you remember.

The series is created and written by Jack Thorne, with Marc Munden directing and executive producing. Additional executive producers include Joel Wilson and Jamie Campbell. The project is produced by Eleven and One Shoe Films, with Sony Pictures Television backing the series. Music is composed by Hans Zimmer, Kara Talve, and Cristobal Tapia de Veer.
