Netflix Renews ‘Wednesday’ for Season 3 Ahead of Season 2 Premiere + Spinoff In the Works

Netflix isn’t letting go of Wednesday anytime soon.

The hit supernatural comedy starring Jenna Ortega has officially been renewed for a third season, just ahead of the highly anticipated two-part Season 2 premiere on August 6 and September 3. But that’s not all—plans are also in motion for a spinoff set within the twisted world of the Addams Family.

Wednesday, which reimagines the iconic Addams Family through the lens of its morbidly witty daughter, quickly became a global phenomenon after its debut in 2022. With over 250 million views, it ranks as the most-watched English-language Netflix original series of all time and scored 12 Emmy nominations, including one for Ortega in Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Season 1 also took home four Emmy wins, further solidifying its place as a cultural juggernaut.

Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and executive produced by Tim Burton, the series follows Wednesday Addams as she’s sent to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for outcasts, after releasing piranhas into her school’s pool. Season 2 will continue to follow her journey at Nevermore as she battles a new enemy in a fight to save her closest friend, Enid.

Returning for Season 2 are Catherine Zeta-Jones (Morticia), Luis Guzmán (Gomez), Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley), Emma Myers (Enid), Gwendoline Christie, and Riki Lindhome, with Billie Piper, Steve Buscemi, Evie Templeton, Owen Painter, and Noah Taylor joining the cast. Zeta-Jones, Guzmán, Ordonez, and Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo have been promoted to series regulars.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Burton and Ortega played coy when asked how long the show might run. “You’re talking to two of the worst people to ask that question,” Burton joked, adding that they’re focused on the work at hand rather than long-term planning.

But the franchise is clearly growing.

A Wednesday spinoff is officially in development, with details being kept under wraps. However, creators Gough and Millar hinted the project could spotlight another member of the Addams Family. “It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at,” Gough teased. Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria added, “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”

From mysterious schools to family secrets, Wednesday continues to build its creepy, kooky empire—one season (and possibly one spinoff) at a time.
