The truth cuts both ways in The Knife, a psychological thriller from first-time director Nnamdi Asomugha, co-written with Mark Duplass.
Premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival—where it won Best New Narrative Director and Best Cinematography—The Knife follows Chris, a construction worker and devoted father, whose dreams of building a better life for his wife and daughters unravel when a mysterious woman shows up in their home one night. Moments later, she’s found unconscious on their kitchen floor, a knife in her hand.
What unfolds is a harrowing night of escalating tension, as Detective Carlsen (Oscar winner Melissa Leo) investigates the incident. But as Chris (played by Asomugha) and his family are questioned, they close ranks—each holding back pieces of the truth in hopes of protecting one another. The consequences of their choices, however, prove deeper and more dangerous than anyone expects.
The film’s cast includes Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away with Murder), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Amari Price, and Aiden Price. Relativity Media and Inaugural Entertainment will release the tension-filled film in theaters nationwide on August 15.
Asomugha, who starred in Crown Heights and Sylvie’s Love, steps behind the camera for the first time with The Knife, delivering a confident, layered debut praised for its emotional depth and restrained suspense.
“Nnamdi is the rare kind of artist whose talent knows no bounds,” said Marc Danon, Chief Content Officer at Relativity. “His vision as a director, depth as an actor, voice as a writer, and leadership as a producer all come together in The Knife.”
Produced by iAm21 Entertainment and Duplass Brothers Productions, the film was also honored with the Jury Prize at the Deauville American Film Festival. Alongside Asomugha, producers include Jonathan T. Baker and Ami Werges, with executive producers Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, Mel Eslyn, Chijioke Asomugha, and Akbar Gbajabiamila, among others.
Cinematographer Alejandro Mejia (Son of Monarchs) and editor Dana Congdon (Sling Blade) shape the film’s taut, suspenseful aesthetic. The film’s U.S. distribution deal was negotiated by CAA Media Finance and Granderson Des Rochers.
A bold exploration of morality, secrecy, and survival, The Knife solidifies Asomugha’s place as a rising creative force—both in front of and behind the camera.
