Peacock Renews Twisted Metal for Season 3, David Reed Steps In as New Showrunner

Peacock has officially renewed Twisted Metal for a third season — and the post-apocalyptic action-comedy is heading into its next chapter with a major creative shift. David Reed (The Boys, Supernatural) will take over as showrunner and executive producer following the exit of series co-creator Michael Jonathan Smith, who led the series through its first two seasons.

Based on the classic PlayStation franchise, the half-hour series launched in 2023 with Anthony Mackie as John Doe, a fast-talking outsider offered a shot at a better life — if he can deliver a mysterious package across a dangerous, post-apocalyptic wasteland.

Season 2’s Momentum

Season 2 picked up after the explosive Season 1 finale, pushing John and Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz) into the deadly “Twisted Metal” tournament, a demolition derby run by the enigmatic Calypso, played by Anthony Carrigan. The season introduced new foes, returning threats — including Sweet Tooth (Joe Seanoa, voiced by Will Arnett) — and expanded the mythology with the reveal of John’s long-lost sister, Dollface (Tiana Okoye).

The Season 2 finale set up a clear path for Season 3: after being framed by Calypso for the massacre of tournament spectators, John and Quiet find themselves at the center of a looming war between the Insiders and the Outsiders.

Viewership Milestone

According to Peacock, Season 2 “registered 993 million minutes viewed,” making it the streamer’s second-highest-reaching returning scripted original season.

David Reed Joins as Showrunner

Reed steps in with a strong genre pedigree. He currently serves as a writer and executive producer on Prime Video’s The Boys and has written for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Magicians, Revolution, Aquarius, and Supernatural. He is under an overall TV deal with Sony Pictures Television and previously got his start on Battlestar Galactica while writing creature features for Syfy. His portfolio also includes novels, comic books, and video games.

Returning Executive Producers

Reed will executive produce alongside Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Additional EPs include Will Arnett and Marc Forman (Electric Ave), Anthony Mackie (Make It Gravy Productions), Jason Spire (Inspire Entertainment), Peter Principato (Artists First), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan for PlayStation Productions, and Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business.
The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television.
