Reinaldo Marcus Green is bringing Southern Bastards to Hulu, with Kevin Bacon set to star in the upcoming drama pilot.
Based on the acclaimed graphic novel series by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour, Southern Bastards follows a determined military veteran who returns to Craw County, Alabama, in search of her estranged father—only to uncover a violent web of organized crime tied to the town’s obsession with high school football.
Bacon will play Earl, the son of the legendary Sheriff Bert, who once ruled Craw County with an iron fist. A tough yet grounded blue-collar Army veteran, Earl is looking to reconnect with his daughter while confronting the dangerous forces controlling the town.
We previously reported on this project when Nia DaCosta was attached to direct the pilot. While it’s unclear if she remains in that role, she still shares story credit. Ozark’s Bill Dubuque penned the teleplay and is executive producing alongside showrunner Matt Olmstead, with Green also executive producing alongside Jason Aaron and Jason Latour. Additional executive producers include Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler for Proximity Media, as well as Layne Eskridge for POV Entertainment.
Southern Bastards is produced by Onyx Collective, POV Entertainment, and Proximity Media, in association with Fifth Season.
Green, best known for King Richard, which earned six Academy Award nominations and won Will Smith Best Actor, most recently directed and co-wrote Bob Marley: One Love.
If you want, I can also make an even punchier version for social posts or Deadline-style headlines that highlights both Green and the DaCosta update. Do you want me to do that next?
