Richard T. Jones Joins Cast of ‘21 Down,’ Inspirational Football Drama Based on True Story

Richard T. Jones has joined the cast of 21 Down, an upcoming sports drama inspired by the true story of Caden Cox, who made history as the first person with Down syndrome to play and score in a college football game.

The film stars Ashley Judd, who also serves as an executive producer, alongside an ensemble that includes Nia Vardalos, Dylan Walsh, Moira Kelly, Christopher Convery, Joshua Malina, Max Adler, and Jones.

21 Down is described as a deeply moving story centered on family, perseverance, and the fight for inclusion. While rooted in the world of sports, the film’s emotional core focuses on the unwavering determination of Caden Cox’s parents, whose belief and advocacy helped their son achieve what many believed was impossible. Judd portrays Mari Cox, Caden’s mother, whose resilience and love drive much of the film’s narrative.

The project is directed by Sean McNamara, from a screenplay written by Jay Paul Deratany and Oscar-winning writer Ron Bass. Bass reunites with frequent collaborator Soni Kifferstein, following their work on the upcoming Bau: Artist at War. Deratany’s previous credits include Foster Boy and the stage musical The Civility of Albert Cashier.

Producing the film is Andrew Sugerman through Pantheon Entertainment, whose credits include Shopgirl, Premonition, and Conviction. Deratany also produces under his Reel Red Films banner. Judd, along with Melissa Bickerton and Thom Lipari, serves as executive producers.

Currently in production, 21 Down is shooting in Atlanta.
