Shonda Rhimes Teases The Next Potential Spinoff in the Bridgerton Universe

After the second half of Bridgerton Season 4 dropped, the question isn’t whether the universe will expand—it’s who gets the next story.

And according to Shonda Rhimes, that next chapter might already be taking shape.

Speaking on Craig Melvin’s Glass Half Full podcast, Rhimes hinted that another spinoff is not only possible—but something they’re actively thinking about.

“I think definitely… that’s an area that we’re excited about and know that that could be really rich and really mined well.”

With the success of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which proved audiences are invested in stories beyond the central siblings, the door is clearly open for more.

But this time, Rhimes has someone specific in mind.

“I’ve always said that I thought if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about—the Bridgerton mom. Yeah, that’s a possibility.”

Played by Ruth Gemmell, Violet Bridgerton has been a steady presence throughout the series—guiding her children through love, loss, and the expectations of society. But Season 4 quietly shifted her role from observer to someone rediscovering her own desires an own love story. However, that relationship was left unresolved by the end of the season, as Violet chose to prioritize herself following a devastating loss—leaving room for future exploration of her personal journey.

While a Violet-led spinoff would follow the franchise’s proven formula of expanding key characters’ backstories, the conversation around potential offshoots has also continued to include another fan-favorite: Lady Danbury.

Played by Adjoa Andoh, Lady Danbury has been a standout presence across Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte, with audiences drawn to her sharp perspective and layered history. Although she appeared to step away at the end of Season 4 with plans for a holiday, showrunner Jess Brownell has confirmed that the character will remain a “big part” of Season 5.

Her role is also expected to evolve, with future episodes exploring a more equal dynamic between Lady Danbury and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel), shifting their relationship from one of hierarchy to true partnership. With additional responsibilities being shared among other characters, Lady Danbury may also step into a more personal chapter of her story.

The continued prominence of the character has only fueled ongoing interest in a potential standalone project centered on her.

Meanwhile, Bridgerton itself shows no signs of slowing down. Season 5 is already confirmed, with additional seasons mapped out, as Netflix continues to invest in one of its most successful global franchises.

Still, if there’s one thing Rhimes understands, it’s how to center a story that resonates beyond romance—and Violet’s journey offers something different. Not just a love story, but a story about timing. About grief. About what it looks like to choose yourself after years of choosing everyone else.

And if this is the direction Bridgerton goes next, it might end up being one of its most layered chapters yet.
