Power: Origins Gets Series Order at STARZ — MeKai Curtis to Return as Kanan

The Power Universe is heading back to where it all began—literally.

STARZ has officially greenlit Power: Origins, a new prequel series chronicling the early days of Ghost and Tommy, the legendary duo who launched the Power franchise into cultural dominance. The announcement marks the fifth installment in the Power Universe and the second prequel, following Power Book III: Raising Kanan.

And in a full-circle moment, Raising Kanan star MeKai Curtis is confirmed to reprise his role as the younger version of Kanan Stark, making him the first original prequel lead to officially transition into Origins. Curtis has portrayed Kanan across four seasons of Raising Kanan, and with the series ending after its upcoming fifth season in 2026, Origins will carry forward some of its narrative legacy—especially as it delves into the mythology that shaped Ghost and Tommy.

Set in the streets of New York City, Power: Origins follows Ghost and Tommy as audacious young hustlers determined to carve out their place and become legends. STARZ describes the series as a “fun, rambunctious exploration of a new time in the Power franchise,” offering fans long-awaited answers about how the iconic duo came to power.

Showrunner Sascha Penn, who has led Raising Kanan since its inception, will write and executive produce the 18-episode season. Casting for the young versions of Ghost and Tommy has not yet been announced, but all signs point to major roles being filled soon.

The return of MeKai Curtis also teases the potential reappearance of Shameik Moore’s character Branford “Breeze” Frady. Introduced in Raising Kanan season four, Breeze is known in Power lore as a crucial player in Ghost and Tommy’s early rise—and eventual betrayal. Whether Moore joins the new series depends on how Raising Kanan concludes, but his character’s presence is already deeply linked to the events that Origins will explore.

“I’m excited to continue to explore the origin stories of the Power Universe’s founding fathers,” Penn shared. “Ghost and Tommy’s backstories have fueled years of fascination and speculation among fans, and I’m thrilled to be able to answer some long-held questions and share new layers of the story that viewers won’t see coming.”

Where Things Stand in the Power Universe

The original Power series, starring Omari Hardwick as Ghost and Joseph Sikora as Tommy, ran from 2014 to 2020 and remains one of STARZ’s most successful dramas. It birthed multiple spinoffs including:

  • Power Book IV: Force – follows Tommy Egan as he builds a new empire in Chicago. Its third and final season is set to air later this year.
  • Power Book III: Raising Kanan – tells the origin of Kanan Stark, played by MeKai Curtis, and will wrap with its fifth season in 2026.

And coming next:

  • Power: Legacy (working title) – Currently in development with Force vets Gary Lennon and Kendra Chapman, Legacy will continue the franchise’s present-day timeline after Force concludes.

As STARZ president Kathryn Busby puts it, “Our fans have been asking for Ghost and Tommy’s origin story since we first met them in Power—and with the launch of this series, we’re delivering in a big way.”

With Origins bridging the world of Raising Kanan and the events that launched the original series, and Legacy preparing to close out Tommy’s journey in Force, the Power Universe shows no signs of slowing down.
