Storm Reid To Star in Coming-of-Age Revenge Thriller ‘Hot Year’

Storm Reid is set to star alongside Kathryn Newton, Dove Cameron, J. Smith-Cameron, and Owen Painter in Hot Year, a coming-of-age revenge thriller marking the feature directorial debut of Roxy Sophie Sorkin.

Written and directed by Sorkin, the indie film is slated to begin production in Oklahoma this May.

Described by Sorkin as “an exploration into brutal honesty and boiling, seething, grotesque womanhood,” Hot Year centers on two childhood best friends whose relationship fractures after a revenge plot against an ex-boyfriend spirals into a violent, irreversible incident. Set over the course of one sweltering night in a small Pacific Northwest town during a relentless heatwave, the film navigates the fallout as buried trauma, loyalty, and identity collide.

Behind the scenes, the project brings together producers Jordan Wagner and Christine Vachon, alongside Evan Silverberg, Dylan Conklin, and Ilya Stewart. Kathryn Newton will also serve as an executive producer.

“Hot Year taps into something very real about friendship and identity at that age,” Wagner said. “It’s emotional, fun, and unpredictable in a way that feels fresh.”

The film follows Sorkin’s run of short films that screened at major festivals including Sundance Film Festival and Tribeca Festival.

For Storm Reid, the role continues a strong run following her Emmy-winning turn in HBO’s The Last of Us. She’s next set to appear in Netflix’s Roommates, arriving April 17, and will also star in Teyana Taylor’s upcoming directorial debut Get Lite.
