Get a first look at Tasha Smith in Twinless, the upcoming dark comedy from writer-director James Sweeney, hitting theaters September 5 via Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate.
The film, which won the Audience Award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, follows two grieving men—Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and Dennis (Sweeney)—who meet in a support group for people who’ve lost their twins. What begins as a strange yet healing friendship soon reveals layers of secrets, grief, identity struggles, and complicated intimacy.
Smith joins the ensemble cast as Charlotte, appearing alongside Lauren Graham, Chris Perfetti, Aisling Franciosi, François Arnaud, Susan Park, and Cree Cicchino.
The just-released trailer offers a glimpse into the film’s unique blend of quirky humor and emotional depth. Roman, shattered after losing his twin brother, meets Dennis at a local twin bereavement group. Their bond quickly strengthens as they begin navigating daily life together—everything from grocery store runs to awkward late-night conversations. But things shift when Roman falls for Dennis’ co-worker Marcie (Franciosi), igniting tension that brings long-buried truths to the surface.
Tasha Smith’s scenes suggest a grounded yet sharp presence in a film full of unexpected emotional turns. Known for commanding performances in Empire and First Wives Club, Smith looks to bring her signature edge to this offbeat drama.
Twinless was written, directed, and co-produced by Sweeney, whose previous feature Straight Up established his voice as a daring and emotionally intricate storyteller. Dylan O’Brien, who also executive produces, delivers a dual role performance as Roman and his late brother, Rocky. The trailer hints at a layered portrayal from O’Brien, whose recent work in Ponyboi has garnered critical acclaim.
Early reviews are already calling Twinless one of the most affecting indie dramas of the year. With a 96% Rotten Tomatoes score and viral buzz—including chatter around a leaked scene featuring O’Brien—the film is poised to spark conversation for its bold exploration of grief, queerness, and codependent connection.
