HBO’s The Last of Us is continuing to expand its world ahead of Season 3 — and one of the show’s breakout performers is officially stepping into a larger role.
Tati Gabrielle has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming season after previously appearing in Season 2 as Nora Harris. She’s joined in the promotion by Ariela Barer and Spencer Lord, who will continue their roles as Mel and Owen.
The casting moves come as HBO prepares for a major shift in perspective for the series’ third season.
A Season Focused on Abby
Season 3 is expected to center on Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever, whose storyline became central in the second season. The narrative pivot mirrors the structure of the video game The Last of Us Part II, which splits its story between Ellie and Abby.
The series itself — based on the hit game franchise developed by Naughty Dog — takes place decades after a fungal outbreak collapses modern civilization. The story follows hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) and teenager Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they navigate a brutal post-apocalyptic United States.
Season 2 jumped five years forward from the first season and ended on a shocking cliffhanger, with Abby confronting Ellie at a Seattle theater — killing Jesse and taking Tommy hostage before the episode cut to black.
New Additions Join Season 3
Alongside the returning cast, HBO has also added two new recurring actors.
Jason Ritter will play Hanley, a soldier in the Washington Liberation Front (WLF). Interestingly, Ritter technically appeared in Season 1 already — portraying an uncredited Clicker alongside his wife, Melanie Lynskey, who played resistance leader Kathleen.
Patrick Wilson has also joined the series as Jerry, Abby’s father. In the story’s lore, Jerry is a Firefly surgeon whose death at Joel’s hands becomes the catalyst for Abby’s revenge-driven journey.
More Returning and New Cast Members
The Season 3 ensemble will also include returning actors:
- Isabela Merced
- Gabriel Luna
- Jeffrey Wright
New additions include: Clea DuVall as a Seraphite and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Manny, replacing Danny Ramirez, who portrayed the character in a recurring capacity during Season 2 but is unable to return due to scheduling conflicts.
Behind the Scenes Changes
Season 3 will also mark a creative shift behind the camera.
Series co-creator Neil Druckmann — who also developed the original game — stepped away from the show after Season 2 in order to focus on upcoming projects at Naughty Dog.
That leaves Craig Mazin, who co-created the series, as the sole showrunner moving forward.
Looking Ahead
While HBO has not revealed specific plot details yet, Season 3 is expected to dive deeper into Abby’s perspective and backstory, expanding the world of The Last of Us and its complex cycle of revenge.
The next season is currently expected to arrive in 2027.
