Taylor Russell Exits Michael B. Jordan’s ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’

Taylor Russell is no longer starring in The Thomas Crown Affair, the upcoming remake from Amazon MGM Studios that is being directed by and starring Michael B. Jordan. Production is already underway in London, and the studio will now recast her role as filming continues.

Russell was set to play the co-lead opposite Jordan—an insurance investigator who grows suspicious of a charming banking executive suspected of orchestrating high-stakes heists. The role mirrors the one played by Faye Dunaway in the 1968 original opposite Steve McQueen, and by Rene Russo opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 1999 remake.

Sources confirmed to multiple outlets, including Deadline, that Russell’s departure was due to creative differences.

Despite the casting shake-up, The Thomas Crown Affair remains on track for its March 5, 2027 theatrical release.

The film’s ensemble cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk, and Aiysha Hart. Jordan is producing alongside Elizabeth Raposo for Outlier Society, Charles Roven for Atlas Entertainment, and Marc Toberoff and Patrick McCormick. The screenplay comes from Drew Pearce, with earlier drafts by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson. Alan Trustman, who wrote the original 1968 film, serves as executive producer.

Russell continues to build an impressive resume with several high-profile projects ahead. She stars in the upcoming Korean thriller Hope, directed by Na Hong-jin and co-starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, and Jung Ho-yeon. She will also appear in Frank Ocean’s upcoming film alongside David Jonsson and is currently in talks to star in a Single White Female remake opposite Jenna Ortega for 3000 Pictures.

Russell is best known for her performances in Bones and All, Waves, and Netflix’s Lost in Space, and recently made her stage debut in The Effect, directed by Jamie Lloyd. She also co-directed the acclaimed short documentary The Heart Still Hums, which won Best Documentary Short at the Palm Springs ShortFest.
