Lionsgate is moving forward with a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter, with Vin Diesel set to return as Kaulder, the immortal witch hunter first introduced in the 2015 film. The project is being developed in collaboration with Diesel’s One Race Films and is being fast-tracked toward production. Michael Caine is also expected to reprise his role as Dolan, stepping out of retirement at 92 for what would be his first feature since 2023’s The Great Escaper.
A Franchise With Renewed Life
When The Last Witch Hunter premiered in 2015, it grossed $27 million domestically and $119 million internationally for a worldwide total of $130 million. While the film’s initial box office performance was modest, it found enduring success in digital and home markets. Over the years it gained a dedicated following and recently re-emerged as one of the most-watched films on Netflix, ranking among the platform’s top five movies this year. That streaming resurgence convinced Lionsgate to revisit the property, aligning with the studio’s strategy of expanding franchises that thrive in ancillary markets and have the potential for long-term library value.
Bigger Ambitions With New Tools
Advances in filmmaking technology over the past decade are expected to allow the sequel to be produced more efficiently while aiming for a larger scale. Lionsgate sees this as an opportunity to expand the story world with greater scope while keeping the project cost-effective.
A Personal Story for Diesel
The original film carried personal significance for Diesel, who has long spoken about how the character was inspired by his own Dungeons & Dragons campaigns. For the actor, returning to Kaulder offers a chance to build on that mythology while expanding his roster of long-running franchises.
With Diesel committed and Caine likely returning, Lionsgate intends to move quickly on assembling the rest of the creative team and bringing the sequel to life.
