Netflix just pulled the curtain back on The Rip, a gritty new crime thriller headlined by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. They are joined by Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, Kyle Chandler,Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Sasha Calle. Add in Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun), Lina Esco (S.W.A.T.), and Scott Adkins (John Wick: Chapter 4), and you’ve got a lineup that’s heavy with talent.
The film is written and directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin’ Aces) and produced by Artists Equity, the studio Damon and Affleck launched in 2022.
The story centers on a team of Miami cops who stumble across millions in cash hidden inside a derelict stash house. What feels like a big score quickly turns into a dangerous game of loyalty and survival as suspicion creeps in and outside forces close in.
Carnahan says the idea came from a close friend who worked in Miami Dade narcotics, and he wanted to capture the raw edge of classic ’70s cop dramas like Serpico and Prince of the City. If you’re a fan of Michael Mann’s Heat, you’ll feel the same DNA running through this.
Even the title comes straight from cop slang: in Miami, a “rip” is what they call seizing the bad guy’s cash, drugs, or weapons. That’s exactly what sets this story in motion.
One of the most exciting names in this cast is Teyana Taylor, who plays Detective Numa Baptiste. After powerful turns in A Thousand and One and The Book of Clarence, she’s proving to be just as magnetic on screen as she is in music. This role only adds to the momentum she’s been building.
Steven Yeun steps in as Detective Mike Ro, Kyle Chandler plays DEA Agent Mateo “Matty” Nix, Catalina Sandino Moreno takes on Detective Lolo Salazar, and Sasha Calle plays Desi. At the center are Damon as Lieutenant Dane Dumars and Affleck as Detective Sergeant J.D. Byrne — two roles that remind us why their chemistry has carried through decades of collaboration.
The Rip hits Netflix worldwide on January 16, 2026.
With a powerhouse cast, a gritty premise, and Carnahan’s signature intensity, this one feels like the kind of throwback thriller that’s going to stick.
